Sir Anthony was a different type of Heyer hero since he was not the lead figure in the book — the Merriotts father grabbed and kept that role — and not the loudest either.
It will never be a favorite of mine, although I could see where Heyer would grow into a wonderful author. They also meet Sir Anthony Fanshawe, a friend of Letty’s father. I’ll own up to my mistakes and will make the corrections with a polite smile on my face. Gifting of the Kindle edition at the Kindle MatchBook price is not available.
Wanted for treason, they disguise themselves as members of the opposite sexes — Robin as the charming Kate Merriot and Prudence as Kate’s brother Peter — but their masquerade is sorely tested when they each fall in love. One part which I could consider a flaw is a point in the story which caused me to change my opinion of a character from ‘flamboyant lovable rogue’ to ‘manipulative egotistic sociopath’, which I don’t think was the author’s intention. They are a brother and sister, who have been involved on the wrong side of the Jacobite rebellion and therefore are in disguise to avoid being hung for treason.
There’s a lot of fun to be had with this book, though I must admit that neither of the romances quite work for me. I really enjoyed the cross-dressing aspect of it, and the confusion it caused Like Like.
Sounds like a good one. I thought the Georgian setting, with its powdered wigs, card games, sword fights and duels, was perfectly portrayed.
Next Post Now posting on Vulpes Libris: The plot is inventive, the heroes charming and original, and the humor of the situations inescapable. This was a different, fun, but overall baffling Heyer read.
It also took me a while to get used to the Georgian-style dialogue, with all the egads, alacks and other slang terms of the period. Peter Merriot, who is actually Prudence, while her brother Robin is playing the role of Kate. I had a friend that was reading the GH books after I was finished with them and we would trade cant comments with each other and had such fun doing that!
And with the greatest of their father’s plans to date unfolding, Robin and Hryer are set up for a happy ending of love and security at last. Belfont and his set, whilst Kate aka Robin is besties with Letty.
Well, I haven’t changed my original three stars. That said, I was a little tiny bit frustrated with how Prudence’s getting taken off the fi Mr. I’ve edited a couple of the worst, but quite a few give away plot points I would rather be surprised about if I was a first time reader!
