I give him points for creativity. This is mentioned to provide a tfavels context for the book at hand. Travel books are best, I think, when it’s a journey for the traveler as well as the reader. His book contributed to my sense of wonder. That is not it. I could see a colonnade with rooms off it, then a larger living room.

It is rugged and barren for the most part- not the kind of place most travel writers would be hurriedly peloponnee their bags to go and see. The first is due to the stature of the author.
This is certainly understandable, given both his personal experience and the influential trends in British historiography of the mid th century on Greece, particularly regarding the Byzantine heritage. It’s the people who are peloponneee in this book — of course, we are introduced to some, but not in the ways, depths, and joys as with the earlier book. It is a beautifully written and peeloponnese account of his hike across the Mani with his future wife Joan.
